Guorui (Gary) Chen is an incoming Assistant Professor in the School of Data and Information Sciences at UNC–Chapel Hill, beginning July 1, 2027. He earned his Ph.D. in bioengineering from UCLA in 2025 and is currently a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University.
Chen’s research integrates next-generation medical devices with artificial intelligence (AI) to advance data-driven healthcare. Specifically, he develops novel home-based, wearable and implantable devices that continuously capture biomechanical data previously inaccessible. By combining these devices with AI models, Chen translates real-world data into clinically actionable insights and guides autonomous medical interventions, creating closed-loop systems that can sense, understand and respond to individual health needs. His first/co-first-author work has been published in leading journals including Nature Biotechnology, Nature Cardiovascular Research, Nature Chemical Engineering, Nature Reviews Bioengineering and Nature Electronics.
Chen has received support through an Amazon Doctoral Fellowship from the AWS/Science Hub for Humanity and Artificial Intelligence and an American Heart Association Predoctoral Fellowship. His honors also include being named a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher (Cross-Field) from 2023 to 2025 and receiving the Arthur Nowick Graduate Student Award for his potential as a future mentor and teacher. Chen’s long-term vision is to translate technological advances into tangible societal benefits and build a more accessible, personalized and data-driven healthcare paradigm that enables longer, healthier lives for all.
